Sopris Village Mid-Century Homes

BasaltMidCentury

I will be forthcoming by being one of the first to admit that Basalt / El Jebel does not have a ton of mid-century modern when compared to the rest of the Roaring Fork Valley or Aspen. Because historically, Aspen was a popular ski town during the mid-century, and Carbondale was mostly mid-century modern ranches, Basalt and El Jebel kind of got “missed” so to speak. I fully recognize that Sopris Village is technically Carbondale, but because of the new Willits development being a Basalt address close by, I feel like Sopris Village is the closest thing Basalt has to a true mid-century neighborhood. That said, there are a few very random mid-century modern homes scattered throughout Basalt (especially A Frames off of Frying Pan Road and some homes with panoramic views closer to Downtown Basalt).

I particularly want to mention Sopris Village, because this enclave is the closest area to resembling mid-century homes than anywhere else in Basalt. While these homes were actually built in the 1970s, almost all of them have the low pitched angled rooflines that are characteristic of mid-century modern homes. Some have other features similar to many mid-century modern homes, such as board and batten siding, chalet modern style railings, moss rock walls, wraparound porches, etc. With the proper architecture partner, those homes have the most potential to become much more mid-century modern in styling with additional window placement and styling.
